Closet Remix: Turning Chaos into Capsule Calm

Let’s be real—how many times have you stared at a closet full of clothes and thought I have nothing to wear?

Been there.

More than once, I’ve stood in front of hangers packed tight, overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time. Pieces I loved once but hadn’t worn in years. Stuff I secretly hated, but couldn’t throw away. Some maybes, just not now.

So one Saturday, coffee in hand, music on…ok — not coffee, yes, it was wine ok. Because we certainly needed wine for this moment. I decided: it was time to remix the closet. Not just clean it. Transform it.

Here’s how I did it—and how you can too.

🧺 Step 1: Take Everything Out
Yes, everything. Onto the bed, the floor, wherever there’s space. It’s messy, I know. But it’s also necessary. You can’t build a fresh start without facing what’s actually in there. This is your “before” moment—embrace it.

👗 Step 2: Try It On (Really)
Not just a glance. Not just a memory. Actually put it on.

Ask yourself:

  • Does it fit?

  • Do I feel good in it?

  • Have I worn it in the last year?

  • Would I buy this again today?

If the answer is no to most, it’s time to say goodbye. Be honest. Your closet should reflect your life now, not the person you used to be or think you “should” be.

🧤 Step 3: Sort Into Three Piles
This is where the remix begins.

  • Keep – The items that spark a yes. They fit, they feel good, and they align with your capsule vibe.

  • Donate/Sell – Good condition but no longer your style? Bless someone else with it.

  • Repair/Maybe – That jacket missing a button. That dress you’re on the fence about. Give yourself a 30-day deadline. If it’s still lingering by then… you know what to do.

♻️ Step 4: Responsibly Rehome
Because sustainability is part of the mission.

  • Drop donations to a local nonprofit thrift store.

  • Host a clothing swap with friends (hello, wine + wardrobe!).

  • List on Poshmark or Depop.

One person’s closet clean-out is another’s favorite new piece.

🧘 Step 5: Breathe and Rebuild
Look at what’s left. These are your essentials. Your favorites. Your “I actually wear this” pieces. Now you’ve cleared the clutter, you can see the gaps—and fill them intentionally. Not with impulse buys, but with quality, secondhand finds that match your personal style and values.

This is what remixing your closet is all about:
Letting go of what no longer serves you.
Honoring who you are today.
And building a wardrobe that works for you—not against you.

Goodbye chaos.
